How to Book a Uganda Gorilla Permit With Us — Just $50 Booking Fee Per Permit
Book a Uganda Gorilla Permit: We book your Uganda gorilla trekking permit directly with UWA for a flat $50 service fee per permit. Here’s exactly how the process works, step by step.
If you’ve been searching for how to book a gorilla permit in Uganda, here’s the short version: as of 2026, foreign travelers can no longer buy Uganda gorilla trekking permits directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) — every non-resident booking now has to go through a licensed Ugandan tour operator.
We’re one of those operators, and we handle the entire Uganda gorilla permit booking process on your behalf for a flat $50 USD service fee per permit, on top of the official UWA permit cost.
That last part matters, so let’s be completely clear about it up front: the $50 is our booking fee, not the total cost of the permit. You still pay the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s official gorilla trekking permit price — currently $800 USD for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, or as low as $600 during Uganda’s discounted low season.
Our $50 fee covers the work of securing, confirming, and issuing that permit correctly on your behalf, with zero guesswork and zero risk of losing your date to someone else.
Why You Now Need a Licensed Operator to Book a Gorilla Permit in Uganda
This isn’t a sales pitch dressed up as a rule — it’s genuinely how Uganda gorilla permit booking works today. UWA restricted direct permit purchases by individual foreign travelers specifically to prevent permit fraud and streamline the reservation process, meaning every foreign non-resident now needs a licensed Uganda gorilla permit booking agent to secure a permit at all.
On top of that, as of March 2026, UWA eliminated the old 7-day “soft hold” on reservations entirely. Full payment is now required immediately at the time of booking to secure your date — there’s no more holding a permit while you decide.
Combined with limited daily permit availability across Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, this makes working with an experienced, responsive operator more important than ever if you actually want your preferred trekking date.
Current Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices 2026
Here’s exactly what the Uganda Wildlife Authority charges for a Uganda gorilla trekking permit in 2026, before our $50 booking fee is added:
| Traveler Category | Standard Permit (Peak/Shoulder Season) | Low-Season Permit (April, May, November) |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Non-Resident | $800 USD | $600 USD |
| Foreign Resident (valid work permit) | $700 USD | $500 USD |
| Rest of Africa (non-EAC citizens) | $500 USD | — |
| East African Community citizens | UGX 300,000 | — |
For travelers wanting more than the standard one-hour visit, the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) — available only in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector — allows up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family alongside researchers and rangers, currently priced at $1,500 USD for foreign non-residents (note: this is scheduled to rise to $1,800 from January 2027, so book sooner rather than later if GHEX interests you).
Every standard permit includes park entry fees, an experienced ranger guide, security, and a full hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural forest habitat.
It does not include transport to the trailhead, meals, accommodation, guide and porter tips, or gear rental — all things we can help you plan around as part of a full Uganda gorilla safari itinerary if you’d like.
How to Book a Gorilla Permit With Us: The Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Tell us your dates and preferred sector. Reach out via WhatsApp, our contact form, or email with your ideal trekking month, how many people are in your group, and — if you have a preference — which Bwindi sector (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo) or Mgahinga you’d like to trek in. If you’re flexible, we’ll recommend the sector with the best current availability for your dates.
Step 2: We check real-time permit availability with UWA. Because we’re a licensed operator with a direct working relationship with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, we can confirm exactly which dates and sectors still have open permits — something you simply can’t check yourself as an individual traveler anymore.
Step 3: You confirm and pay. Once we’ve found available permits matching your dates, we’ll send you a clear cost breakdown: the official UWA permit price ($800, $700, $600, or $500 depending on your category) plus our flat $50 booking fee per permit.
Since UWA now requires full payment at time of booking with no holding period, we move quickly here to lock in your date before it’s released to someone else.
Step 4: We book and confirm your permit with UWA. We handle the actual reservation and payment process directly with UWA on your behalf, using the passport and traveler details you’ve provided. You’ll receive a booking confirmation first, followed by the physical permit card used during your park briefing on trekking day.
Step 5: We build the rest of your trip around it (optional). Many travelers book a permit with us as part of a full gorilla safari itinerary — accommodation, transport, and a guided trek included — but you’re never obligated to book anything beyond the permit itself if that’s all you need.
What Our $50 Gorilla Permit Booking Fee Actually Covers
Because we want this to be completely transparent, here’s exactly what your $50 booking fee per gorilla permit pays for: real-time availability checks directly with UWA, correct submission of your traveler details to avoid name-mismatch delays at park briefing, full payment handling under UWA’s new immediate-payment rule, permit confirmation and physical card collection, and a direct point of contact if anything changes with your dates before your trek.
It does not include the UWA permit fee itself, transport, accommodation, or any part of a broader safari package — those are quoted and paid separately, with full clarity at every step.
Booking Rules You Should Know Before You Reserve
Cancellations follow a sliding refund scale set by UWA based on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trekking date — the earlier you cancel, the more you typically recover. Note that any of our own booking-fee cancellation terms are separate from UWA’s permit refund tiers.
Rescheduling is treated differently from cancellation. It’s generally only permitted when requested 91 days or more before your original trekking date, and a 20–25% fee typically applies.
Critically, low-season discount permits ($600/$500) cannot be rescheduled at all — a firm rule worth knowing before you commit to those dates.
Illness protocol matters more than most travelers expect: if you’re too unwell to trek and a UWA park warden confirms this at park headquarters, you may receive a 50% refund.
Be honest about symptoms before your trek — mountain gorillas share roughly 98.4% of human DNA and can die from something as ordinary as a human cold, which is exactly why UWA takes this rule seriously.
Bwindi’s Four Sectors, Briefly Explained
Buhoma is Bwindi’s original, most established sector, with the widest lodge selection and reliably good gorilla family access.
Ruhija sits at higher altitude, offering cooler trekking conditions and strong birding alongside gorilla trekking. Rushaga hosts the most habituated gorilla families of any sector and is also home to the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Nkuringo offers a more remote, rugged trekking experience with stunning Virunga views, often with steeper terrain than the other three sectors.
We’ll help match you to the right sector based on your fitness level, travel dates, and what you want out of the trek — not just whichever has the most permits left.
Why Book Your Gorilla Permit Through Us
We’re a UWA licensed partner, UTB registered operator, and RDB accredited safari company, operating as Afrik-Trek Holidays E.A Ltd since 2023, with a 4.4-star rating across verified TripAdvisor reviews.
That licensing isn’t a formality — it’s exactly what makes it legally possible for us to book Uganda gorilla trekking permits on your behalf in the first place, now that direct UWA bookings are closed to individual foreign travelers.
Beyond the permit itself, we typically respond to booking enquiries the same day, usually within a few hours, so you’re not left waiting to find out whether your dates are even available.
Whether you want just the permit or a fully planned Uganda gorilla safari around it, we’re set up to handle either request with the same level of transparency.
Popular Gorilla Trekking Safaris You Can Book Alongside Your Permit
If you’d like your gorilla permit bundled into a complete trip rather than booked on its own, here are some of our most popular options: a fast 1 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda itinerary for time-limited travelers, a more relaxed 2 Days Uganda Safari or 2 Days Silverback Gorilla Safari, and our well-paced 3 Days Gorilla Trekking Safari with two nights near Bwindi.
For the immersive four-hour encounter, our 3 Days Gorilla Habituation package builds a full trip around the Rushaga GHEX permit specifically.
Travelers wanting to combine primates want to look at our 4 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Tour, 4 Days Gorillas & Lake Bunyonyi Safari, 5 Days Kibale & Bwindi Gorilla, 5 Days Gorillas & Murchison Falls Safari, 6 Days Gorilla & Wildlife Safari, or our 6 Days Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Adventure.
For longer, deeper circuits, browse our 7 Days Uganda Cultural & Gorilla Safari, 7 Days Uganda Primate Safari, and 8 Days Uganda Safari options.
Combining Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla Permits
Since both countries share the same Virunga Massif gorilla population, many travelers combine a Uganda permit with a Rwanda permit on a single trip. We book both.
Popular combined itineraries include our 4 Days Gorillas & Golden Monkeys, 4 Days Gorilla Trekking from Kigali, 5 Days Nyungwe Forest Chimps & Gorillas, 7 Days Gorillas & Wildlife Tour, longer 12 Days Rwanda-Uganda and 2 Week Rwanda-Uganda Safari circuits, and our comprehensive 14 Days Uganda Rwanda Combo Safari. Browse the full range on our Rwanda-Uganda safaris page.
Where You’ll Trek: Uganda’s Gorilla Trekking National Parks
Gorilla trekking permits are valid for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and we can also help arrange accommodation near Bwindi to match your budget and preferred sector.
If you’re combining gorilla trekking with broader wildlife viewing, our guides to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Lake Mburo National Park cover Uganda’s other headline safari destinations, all bookable in the same itinerary as your gorilla permit.
FAQs: Booking a Gorilla Permit in Uganda
Is $50 the total price of a Uganda gorilla permit? No — $50 is our booking service fee only. You still pay UWA’s official permit price, currently $800 for foreign non-residents ($600 in low season), $700 for foreign residents ($500 in low season), or $500 for Rest-of-Africa citizens.
Can I book a Uganda gorilla permit directly with UWA myself? Not anymore, if you’re a foreign traveler. Since 2024, and reinforced under 2026 UWA policy, individual foreign non-residents must book through a licensed Ugandan tour operator like us — direct online booking for this category has been discontinued.
How far in advance should I book? For peak season (June–September and December–February), aim for 6–10 months ahead. For low season (April, May, November), 3–6 months is usually sufficient — but remember low-season permits can’t be rescheduled once booked.
Do you only book permits, or do I need to book a full safari? Either — we’re happy to book just the permit if that’s all you need, though many travelers combine it with a broader Uganda safari itinerary for convenience.
What happens after I pay? We submit your booking and payment directly to UWA, you’ll receive a booking confirmation, and the physical permit card follows ahead of your trekking date, ready for your park briefing.
