4 Day Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi Safari -Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

An early morning departure from Kampala begins the roughly 8–9 hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing rolling hills, lush vegetation, and bustling local markets along the way.

Stop for lunch in Mbarara at the Igongo Cultural Centre or a local restaurant, with an optional pause at the equator for photos. Check into your lodge in the evening for dinner and rest ahead of tomorrow’s trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

After an early breakfast, a briefing at park headquarters covers safety measures, trekking etiquette, and the conservation significance of mountain gorillas, before you head into the dense Bwindi forest to track a habituated gorilla family.

The trek can take 2–6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location that day, rewarded with a full hour in their presence — watching them interact, feed, and care for their young.

After the trek, return to your lodge to rest, with an optional afternoon Batwa cultural experience offering insight into the lives of the forest’s original inhabitants.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and Boat Ride

Punishment Island: The Story Behind the Name

Punishment Island is one of Lake Bunyonyi’s smallest islands, and its name carries real, documented history. In the past, unmarried Bakiga girls who became pregnant were historically exiled to this tiny island by their families — a genuinely difficult piece of local history, and one your boat guide will typically explain with appropriate context during the Day 3 cruise.

Today the island is simply a quiet stop on the lake tour, but understanding its history adds real depth to what would otherwise be just another scenic island.

Why Lake Bunyonyi Is Genuinely Different From a Typical Safari Stop

Lake Bunyonyi sits at roughly 1,950 metres above sea level, and its altitude is exactly why it’s long been considered one of the few malaria-free areas in Uganda — the cooler, higher-elevation conditions are far less hospitable to mosquitoes than lower-lying regions.

This is a genuinely welcome detail for travelers who’ve spent the previous two days on anti-malarial precautions elsewhere in the country, though standard precautions are still sensible for the rest of your Uganda trip.

Locally referred to as “the place of many little birds,” the lake also offers genuinely excellent birdwatching directly from your canoe or boat, without needing a dedicated game drive.

What Gorilla Trekking Costs on This Itinerary

A valid Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla permit is required for Day 2, currently priced at $800 per person for foreign non-residents in high season, with a discounted $600 permit available for travelers trekking in April, May, or November.

Foreign residents pay $700 in high season and $500 in low season. Permits now require full payment at the time of booking, so factor that into how early you confirm your dates — especially since Lake Bunyonyi’s relaxed pacing means this itinerary is popular with travelers booking well ahead for a genuinely unhurried trip.
