Day 1: Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

An early morning pick-up from Kampala or Entebbe starts the drive southwest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, roughly 500km and 8–9 hours. The route passes rolling hills, lush vegetation, and terraced farms across western Uganda, with a stop at the Equator crossing for photos and local craft shopping. Arrive in Bwindi by evening, settle into your lodge, and prepare for the following day’s trek over dinner.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

After an early breakfast, head to park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers before setting off into dense jungle in search of a habituated gorilla family.

The trek runs 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day, with a full hour granted once you locate them — watching, photographing, and simply absorbing the moment.

Afterward, return to your lodge to rest, with an optional afternoon visit to a Batwa pygmy community to learn about their history as the forest’s original inhabitants.

Day 3: The Long Transfer North to Murchison Falls National Park

This is genuinely the itinerary’s toughest logistical day — the drive from Bwindi to Murchison Falls National Park covers roughly 600km and takes 10–11 hours, crossing almost the full length of Uganda from the country’s far southwest to its north.

The route is scenic, passing through small towns and rural villages, with a lunch stop en route, but it’s a long day in the vehicle by any measure. Arrive at the park by evening for dinner and rest.

Murchison Falls

Day 4: Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise in Murchison Falls

An early morning game drive along the park’s northern bank reveals lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and antelope across open savannah, with genuinely strong photography conditions in the morning light.

In the afternoon, a boat cruise along the Nile heads to the base of Murchison Falls itself, passing hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds including kingfishers and fish eagles before reaching the thunderous spray at the base of the falls.

Travelers with energy left can add a short hike to the top of the falls, watching the entire Nile force itself through a gorge just 7 metres wide before plunging 43 metres down.

Day 5: Return to Kampala or Entebbe, via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After breakfast, begin the roughly 305km, 6–7 hour journey back toward Kampala or Entebbe. An optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route is genuinely worth building in — it’s the only place in Uganda to see rhinos in the wild, following their local extinction decades ago and a subsequent, still-ongoing reintroduction programme. Arrive back in Kampala or Entebbe by late afternoon.

Permits now require full payment at the time of booking rather than a holding period, so factor that into how early you confirm your trip.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Why It’s Worth the Detour

Uganda’s rhino population was wiped out by poaching and civil conflict by the late 1980s. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, established in 2005, has since become the country’s dedicated rhino reintroduction site, and it’s now the only place in Uganda where you can see rhinos in a wild, free-roaming setting rather than a zoo enclosure.

Since this itinerary already passes close to Ziwa on the return journey from Murchison Falls, adding this stop costs relatively little extra time for a genuinely meaningful wildlife encounter you won’t get anywhere else on the trip.
