Water Adventures on the Nile
White Water Rafting in Jinja
White water rafting is the most popular adventure activity in Jinja. The Nile here is a big-volume, warm-water river with rapids from Grade III to Grade V, and it is rated among the best one-day rafting trips in the world.
- Rapids: the main run covers a series of Grade III to V rapids with long calm pools between them. A Grade I to II family float is available for children and nervous swimmers.
- What is included: helmet, life jacket, paddle, safety kayakers, a rescue raft, lunch and transport back to Jinja.
- Who can do it: no experience is needed. You get a full safety briefing and practise flipping the raft in flat water before the first rapid.
- Trip length: a half-day trip covers the first set of rapids, while the full day runs about 20 km of river.
Rafting runs all year, because the river’s flow is steady in every season.
Kayaking on the Nile
Kayaking in Jinja ranges from gentle flat-water paddles to some of the best freestyle white water in Africa.
- Flat-water and sunset paddles: sit-on-top kayaks on calm stretches of the river, suitable for beginners and families.
- Tandem white water kayaking: you ride the rapids in a two-seat kayak with an expert guide at the back.
- Kayak school: one to five day courses teach rolling and river reading to complete beginners.
Quiet paddling is also a good way to see water birds such as African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and cormorants. For more, see our guide to birdwatching in Uganda.
River Tubing and Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Tubing is the easiest way onto the river. You float downstream in an inflated tube, either on flat water or through small rapids with a guide. Stand-up paddleboards can be hired on the calm stretches above the rapids. Both suit travellers who want time on the Nile without the intensity of rafting.
Boat Cruise to the Source of the Nile
A boat cruise to the source of the Nile takes one to two hours from the Jinja waterfront. You cross the point where the river leaves Lake Victoria and begins its 6,650 km journey to the Mediterranean. Sunset cruises with drinks are the most popular. You can extend the trip with our Lake Victoria tours.
