Day 1: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

An early pick-up from Kampala or Entebbe starts the roughly 6–7 hour, 310km drive to Murchison Falls National Park. En route, stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for the chance to track rhinos on foot — a genuinely different experience from a vehicle-based game drive.

After lunch en route, continue into the park itself and head straight to the top of Murchison Falls, watching the entire Nile force itself through a narrow gorge to create the world’s most powerful waterfall by volume. The sound alone is worth the drive.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise

An early start for a game drive along the Buligi Game Tracks, on the Nile’s northern bank — genuinely one of the park’s best areas for spotting lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and antelope in the soft morning light.

In the afternoon, a Nile boat cruise heads to the base of Murchison Falls, passing crocodiles, hippos, and waterbirds including African fish eagles and kingfishers along the way. Top of the Falls vs Base of the Falls: Do You Need Both?

First-time visitors often ask whether the Day 1 hike to the top of Murchison Falls and the Day 2 boat cruise to its base are really two different experiences worth doing both — and genuinely, yes.

From the top, you look almost straight down into the gorge as the entire Nile compresses into a channel just a few metres wide, with real force and spray.

From the base, reached by boat, you look up at the full 43-metre drop from below, with the scale of the falls hitting differently from that angle. Doing both isn’t repetitive; it’s genuinely two distinct ways of experiencing the same natural wonder.

Rhino Tracking at Ziwa: What to Expect

Unlike a vehicle game drive, rhino tracking at Ziwa Sanctuary is done entirely on foot, with an armed ranger leading small groups toward rhinos that have already been located by the sanctuary’s monitoring team.

You’ll typically get to within a safe but genuinely close distance — often 20–30 metres — of grazing white rhinos, a species that was completely wiped out in Uganda by the late 1980s before Ziwa’s reintroduction programme began in 2005.

It’s currently the only place in the entire country to see rhinos outside a zoo enclosure, making this Day 1 stop a genuine highlight in its own right, not just a warm-up for the main park.
