# **Are You Smarter Than a Chimpanzee? What Science Really Says**

**Are You Smarter Than a Chimpanzee: In most ways, yes: humans are far smarter than chimpanzees, with language, abstract reasoning, long-term planning and a culture that builds on itself over generations, but chimpanzees are not simply "dumb apes," and in a few narrow tests, such as flash-memory for numbers, trained young chimps have matched or even beaten adult humans.** Chimpanzees share roughly 98 to 99 percent of our DNA, make and use tools, live in complex social groups, recognise themselves in mirrors, and pass learned behaviours from one generation to the next. Their brains are only about a third the size of ours, yet they solve problems that surprise even the scientists who study them. So the honest answer to "are you smarter than a chimpanzee?" is: it depends which kind of smart you mean. This guide explains how smart chimpanzees really are, what they can do better than humans (and what they cannot), how a famous chimpanzee memory test works, and where in Uganda you can meet wild chimpanzees and judge their intelligence for yourself.
## Are You Smarter Than a Chimpanzee? A Quick Scorecard

| Skill | Who Wins? | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Language and speech** | Humans, by a very wide margin | Chimps can learn some signs and symbols, but nothing like human language |
| **Abstract reasoning and mathematics** | Humans | Chimps can learn numerals, but not algebra or abstract proofs |
| **Long-term planning and technology** | Humans | Chimps plan short-term, but humans build cumulative technology |
| **Short-term visual memory for numbers** | Sometimes chimps | A trained young chimp beat students in one famous test, though the result is debated |
| **Tool use** | Humans overall, chimps impressive | Chimps make and use tools in the wild |
| **Social intelligence** | Both | Chimps cooperate, form alliances and use deception |
| **Climbing and agility** | Chimps | Humans cannot compete in the trees |
| **Strength for body size** | Chimps | Far stronger than a human of the same weight |

### How Smart Are Chimpanzees?

Chimpanzees are among the most intelligent animals on Earth, and our closest living relatives. Researchers have documented in chimpanzees: - **Tool making and tool use**, including stripped twigs for fishing termites and stones for cracking nuts
- **Social learning**, with skills passed on by watching and copying
- **Cooperation**, including group hunting and coalition-building
- **Self-recognition**, shown by passing mirror tests that only a handful of species pass
- **Emotional lives**, including grief, comfort and play
- **Problem-solving**, including using one tool to get another

Their brains are far smaller than ours, roughly 400 cubic centimetres compared with about 1,350 for a human, so chimpanzees are not our equals, but brain size alone does not tell the whole story, and in the wild chimpanzees show intelligence suited to the forest life they live.
### Chimpanzee Brain vs. Human Brain

| | Chimpanzee | Human |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Brain size** | About 400 cubic centimetres | About 1,350 cubic centimetres |
| **Shared DNA** | Roughly 98 to 99 percent | Roughly 98 to 99 percent |
| **Language** | No spoken language | Complex spoken and written language |
| **Cumulative culture** | Limited, but real | Vast and accelerating |
| **Life** | Forest and savanna edges in Africa | Everywhere on the planet |

### The Famous Chimpanzee Memory Test: Can a Chimp Beat You?

The most famous example of chimp "genius" is a memory experiment at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute. A young chimpanzee named Ayumu was trained to look at numerals from 1 to 9 flashed in random places on a touchscreen, then touch the spots in numerical order after the numbers were replaced by blank squares. When the numerals appeared for only a fraction of a second, Ayumu outperformed the university students he was tested against, in both speed and accuracy. The researchers suggested young chimps may have an extraordinary, almost photographic working memory for such tasks. **But the full story has caveats.** Critics noted that Ayumu had been trained on the task extensively, while the human participants had not, and later research on human practice suggests that with training, people can improve substantially. Some have suggested that young chimpanzees and young human children may be closer in this ability than adults. So the fair reading is that chimpanzees are genuinely remarkable at this kind of rapid visual memory, but the idea that "chimps are smarter than humans" is an exaggeration. You can try similar "chimp test" memory games online to see how you compare.
### Chimpanzee Tool Use: Smart Hands, Smart Minds

Tool use is one of the clearest signs of chimpanzee intelligence. Wild chimpanzees: - **Fish for termites** with carefully prepared twigs or grass stems, a behaviour first documented in detail by Jane Goodall at Gombe.
- **Crack nuts** with stone hammers and anvils, as seen in West African communities, where young chimps spend years learning the skill from their mothers.
- **Use leaves as sponges** to soak up water they cannot reach with their mouths.
- **Make and carry tools** to the places where they will use them, a sign of forward planning.

What makes this even more striking is that different chimpanzee communities use different techniques, which scientists interpret as a form of culture, learned socially and handed down, not inherited in the genes.
### Do Chimpanzees Have Culture?

Yes, in a limited but real sense. Neighbouring chimpanzee communities can differ in how they use tools, groom, or display, even when they live in similar habitats, which suggests behaviours are learned from group members, not instinctive. Young chimpanzees watch and practise, sometimes for years, before they master complex skills. Humans take culture much further, because language lets us accumulate knowledge across generations at a scale no ape can match, but chimpanzees show that the roots of culture go deep in our family tree.
### Can Chimpanzees Count and Plan Ahead?

Chimpanzees can learn to recognise and use numerals, as the chimpanzee Ai did in Kyoto, and to compare quantities, and in the wild they show planning in the way they carry tools to a feeding site or choose where to nest. Their abilities, however, remain far behind human mathematics and long-range planning. A chimpanzee can learn to order the numerals one to nine; it cannot invent algebra or plan a decade ahead. This is one of the clearest areas where humans pull ahead.
### Chimpanzee Social Intelligence: Politics, Cooperation and Deception

Many scientists believe chimpanzees' social lives drove the evolution of their intelligence. In a chimpanzee community, an individual must track who is allied with whom, who is dominant, who can be trusted, and who owes whom a favour. Chimpanzees: - **Form alliances** and sometimes challenge a rival together
- **Groom** each other to build and repair relationships
- **Share food** and cooperate in group hunts
- **Console** distressed companions
- **Deceive**, such as concealing food from a dominant rival

Long-term research on forest chimpanzee communities, including studies in Uganda, has shown how complex their social worlds are, and why watching them in the wild is so fascinating.
### Do Chimpanzees Recognise Themselves?

Chimpanzees pass the mirror self-recognition test: when a mark is placed on their face, they look in a mirror and touch the mark on their own bodies, suggesting they recognise the reflection as themselves. Only a handful of species pass this test, which is one reason chimpanzees are considered among the most self-aware animals.
### Can Chimpanzees Talk? Where They Fall Short

Here the difference with humans is stark. Chimpanzees have been taught signs and symbols in captivity and can learn to use many of them, but no ape has developed anything like the open-ended, grammatical language that every human child acquires. Wild chimpanzees communicate with calls, gestures and facial expressions that carry real meaning, but they cannot discuss the past, imagine distant futures or share abstract ideas the way we can. Language is the main reason human knowledge compounds over time, and it is the single biggest gap between us.
### Where Humans Clearly Win

- **Language and storytelling**, which let us share knowledge across space and time
- **Abstract thought**, including mathematics, science and philosophy
- **Cumulative technology**, from fire to smartphones
- **Large-scale cooperation** among strangers
- **Long-term planning** across years and generations

### Where Chimpanzees Clearly Win

- **Physical strength and agility**, especially for climbing
- **Rapid visual memory** in some tasks, at least in trained young animals
- **Life in the forest canopy**, where humans are clumsy visitors

### Can You Meet Wild Chimpanzees in Uganda?

Yes, and it is one of the best places on Earth to see chimpanzees in Uganda's wild forests. Uganda holds large chimpanzee populations in several forests, and each offers a different way to watch these intelligent animals in the wild: | Place | Why Go |
| --- | --- |
| **Kibale National Park** | The "primate capital," home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and about 13 primate species |
| **Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls area)** | Chimps in a mahogany forest, paired with big game and the Nile |
| **Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National Park)** | A dramatic gorge setting for chimpanzee tracking |
| **Kalinzu Forest Reserve** | A quieter, good-value forest near Queen Elizabeth |
| **Ngamba Island** | A sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees near Entebbe |
| **Bwindi and Mgahinga** | Mountain gorillas, the perfect partner to a chimp trek |

On a chimpanzee trek you are guided by trained rangers to a habituated group and spend a supervised period watching them feed, groom, play and call. Pay attention to what they do: you may see them using branches and leaves, settling disputes, comforting one another, and teaching the young. ### Tips for Watching Chimpanzee Intelligence in the Wild

- **Go early.** Chimpanzees are often most active in the cooler morning hours.
- **Watch quietly.** Stay calm and follow your ranger's instructions.
- **Observe relationships.** Look at who grooms whom, who sits near the dominant male and how mothers care for infants.
- **Look for tools.** Sticks, leaves and stones can be signs of problem-solving.
- **Bring binoculars and a camera**, but never use flash.
- **Stay healthy.** Chimpanzees can catch human illnesses, so anyone with a cough or cold must tell the rangers and may be asked to stay behind.

### Are You Smarter Than a Chimpanzee - FAQs

**Are you smarter than a chimpanzee?** Overall, yes. Humans have language, abstract reasoning and cumulative culture that chimpanzees lack. But chimpanzees outperform humans in some narrow tasks and are extremely intelligent animals. **How smart are chimpanzees?** Very. They make and use tools, learn from each other, cooperate, recognise themselves in mirrors, understand numerals in lab settings and have rich social and emotional lives. **Can a chimp beat a human at memory?** In one famous test, a young trained chimpanzee outperformed university students at recalling the positions of briefly flashed numerals. The result is debated because the chimps were extensively trained and the humans were not. **What is the IQ of a chimpanzee?** There is no direct human-style IQ for chimpanzees, since IQ tests are built for humans. Scientists instead compare specific abilities, such as memory, tool use and social reasoning. **How does a chimpanzee brain compare with a human brain?** A chimpanzee brain is roughly 400 cubic centimetres, about a third the volume of a human brain at around 1,350 cubic centimetres. **How much DNA do chimpanzees share with humans?** Roughly 98 to 99 percent, which is why they are our closest living relatives, alongside bonobos. **Can chimpanzees use tools?** Yes. They fish for termites with twigs, crack nuts with stones and use leaves as sponges, and different communities have different techniques. **Can chimpanzees count?** They can learn numerals and compare quantities, and one chimpanzee learned to order the numerals from one to nine, but they do not do advanced mathematics. **Can chimpanzees talk?** No. Some have learned signs or symbols in captivity, but they have not developed anything like human language. **Where can I see wild chimpanzees?** In Uganda, in forests including Kibale, Budongo, Kalinzu and Kyambura Gorge, as well as at the Ngamba Island sanctuary near Entebbe. **Are chimpanzees dangerous?** Chimpanzees are strong and can be unpredictable, which is why trekkers keep a safe distance and follow rangers. Habituated groups used to tourism are accustomed to quiet visitors, but you should never approach or touch them. **Can children go chimpanzee tracking?** There is a minimum age, which is generally 15. Confirm the rule for the park you are visiting when you book.
